I hadn’t expected Matthew to be so romantic, or at least to have the time to be. He was always so busy, the hospital taking up so much of his nights and days that, on occasion, he barely had a moment to eat and sleep.
Yet somehow, he’d booked an Alpine lodge in Austria for a pre-Christmas getaway. He’d organised our flights and transfers and stocked the cupboards with every delicious festive treat imaginable.
Not that I needed edible treats when I had Matthew all to myself, that was enough…he was enough.
“Really? You want me to ride that?” I laughed and pointed at the little wooden sledge he’d pulled from a shed.
“Why not? You trust me, right? I am a doctor.”
Again, I laughed and squeezed his arm. “I’m pretty sure you didn’t study tobogganing at medical school.”
He shrugged and brushed his cool lips over mine. “True, but come on, we’re celebrating our second anniversary after all.”
I stamped my booted feet in the snow to keep them warm and looked at the icy path ahead. It was lined with pine trees, and the brilliant blue sky above cast lilac shadows. It didn’t look too steep nor too perilous, so I laughed and sat astride the sledge.
Quickly he sat behind me, his big solid body warm against my back, and then he pushed off.
I let out a squeal of delight as we picked up speed. He chuckled and held me tighter. I couldn’t remember when we’d last had such fun, perhaps in Turkey, during the summer when we’d gone paragliding.
