How to use cock rings – tips & tricks

Cock rings don’t always get the best rep, and it’s usually because people are misinformed on how to use them, which one is right for them, and the purpose of their functionalities. Originally developed to be used as effective erection aids, cock rings were made to squeeze the base of the shaft (and sometimes testicles) to hold all blood in the penis and therefore help keep your penis harder for longer. If they are used correctly, cock rings can be amazing accessories for boosted performance, enhanced confidence, and sexual pleasure.

Like many sex toys that are used on or in sensitive parts of the body, people can be put off using cock rings due to a bad experience, choosing the wrong type of product, or listening to horror stories instead of trying things out for themselves. This is what leads so many people to feel they ‘don’t like’ a certain type of product and be put off for life. Often, it’s just because they needed a different product or to use it in a different way.

With lots of adult toys and sexual aids, the beginning of getting the best out of the item is to make sure it fits, it has the functions you require, and that you understand how to use it. People with penises are often sold the idea that masturbating, playing with your penis, or having a penis that doesn’t function like a Porn Star makes them the butt of the joke or not to be taken seriously. Penile pleasure is often written off as ‘pathetic’ and simplistic, but you have every right to enjoy this beautiful part of your body. And trust me, I find penises BEAUTIFUL in many ways.

There are so many different types of cock rings, with so many different purposes, functionalities, and levels of effectiveness for all different penis types (and needs).

“I’ve had a bad experience with a cock ring, and I don’t like them.”

Then you’ve used the wrong one. Read this guide before deciding they aren’t for you.

How do I wear a cock ring?

There are two popular ways to wear cock rings. The first is simply over the penis shaft, which hugs your shaft at the base – helping to keep the blood inside of the penis and therefore assisting you in staying harder and for longer.

The second way (and the more effective way, in my opinion) is over the shaft and the testicles, so it’s worn at the base of the penis and balls. This retains the blood flow and pressure at a higher point for both maximised erections and sensations during playtime.

How does a cock ring work?

YES. They are tight (sometimes flexible) rings that squeeze you at the base to restrict blood flow from escaping the penis and going back into your body.

Which material should I go for?

If you’re a beginner or have had bad experiences with cock rings, then always start with a soft and stretchy ring. Something made of a flex-TPR (thermoplastic rubber) or soft silicone is ideal for beginners. These deliver the restriction of a cock ring but without the pressure of the firmer cock rings. They’re also much easier to stretch over your shaft and balls without stressing yourself out.

Alternatively, you can go for a soft ‘lasso’ style cock ring, which you can manually tighten to the desired level of pressure by adjusting the beads/buttons on the lasso itself.

How do I put on a cock ring?

I always advise starting by putting a little ring of lube around the base of the penis and the balls. This prevents the tight ring from chafing and irritating your intimate skin and pubic hair (if you have some). If you have sensitive skin, like me, then definitely use some water-based lube around the area to keep things slick and comfy.

I advise putting a cock ring on when you are flaccid or semi-flaccid. A common misconception is that this will prevent you from getting hard, but that’s not the case. Your penis will very much get erect with the ring on, and it’ll help keep that beautiful boner going strong.

Stretch it over the shaft first, to the base, and then stretch it over the balls. Take it slow and make sure you’ve cleaned all the lube off of your hands, as the last thing you want to do is have it ‘ping’ at you, like an elastic band’ and smack your goodies. Take care when stretching over the balls, as they’re very sensitive. If you have a partner, maybe ask them to assist if you’re particularly nervous.

I don’t want to have to use cock rings

You’re probably reading this guide because you are a little curious about what a cock ring can do to help you sexually as well as improve the experience. Having a penis that doesn’t perform to porn industry standards can feel embarrassing, and there’s a lot of pressure on men and people with penises to be able to perform. Please don’t ever be embarrassed to do anything that makes you feel better about yourself.

Cock rings were designed to be performance-enhancing sex-cessories. They are quite literally there to help improve your performance confidence alongside helping you to enjoy the experience of sex (including foreplay, as this is also sex) with more ease, skill, and comfort. It’s all about making you feel good, inside and out.

Don’t think of a cock ring as something to be ashamed of. Think of it as something that’s been expertly designed to make sex better for you. And they will.

Can they make sex better for my partner and me?

Yes, they can. There are so many variations of cock rings on the market that it would be a little impossible to list all of the ways they can improve the experiences of masturbation and oral, vaginal, and anal sex – for both partners.

There are cock rings with functionalities such as vibrations, attached swinging balls, textured shapes, stimulators etc. – all designed to stimulate both (or more) partners as you play. There are even cock rings with dildos attached for double penetration.

If you’re new to couple’s cock rings, I’d advise beginning ‘basic’ with a vibrating ring. This will stimulate both partners and give you a delicious baby step into the exciting world of cock rings.

How to remove a cock ring?

First of all: remove all lube from your hands and dry them to avoid anything slipping. If you’re new to cock rings, treat your penis as though it’s made of eggshells. Gently stretch it WIDE and remove the ring from OVER the balls first (if you’re wearing it at the base of the testicles). Take a break and let it rest so it’s just on the shaft. Then, when you’re ready, gently stretch over the shaft and guide it off. Don’t rush any of these steps as it can awkwardly pull and nudge your penis and/or balls, which doesn’t feel nice, does it, lads?

What to do if you think it’s stuck?

Don’t panic. It will come off. It’s easy to panic and want it off IMMEDIATELY but be patient. Your penis is wonderfully sensitive, and it will thank you for taking things slow. A stretchy ring will come off. You just have to be patient and have the confidence to stretch it over. Some of these rings can stretch up to 5x their size. Do not attempt to cut or slice the ring off.

The first thing you should do is try to allow your penis to soften a little, which will be much easier if you have ejaculated. A semi-flaccid penis will be much easier to remove. Adding a helping of lube to help things slide off will also be helpful. Just remember to try and keep your hands as dry as possible.

If your penis is feeling swollen, run some cool water over it and gradually reduce the temperature until it’s almost ice cold – this will reduce swelling and make the ring easier to take off. Dry your penis as much as you can (and the ring) before trying to remove it.

  1. I’m glad I took the time to read a few inserts
especially the one about cock rings. I never tried one myself but after reading about them, I am going to give it a try. I think I’ll try the ring that also goes around your nuts!!! I was sick around 2009 and my wife stood by me and waited until I got better and my sex life came back.

I was sick around 2009 and my wife stood by me and waited until I got better and my sex life came back. Then we found out after waiting for the urge to come back, I hear about these commercials for guys over 40 their testosterone levels going down each year and yes, I got my blood work and the minimum on the chart is from like 300 to 900 and when I got out of the nursing home, and I wondered about my level was well under 100. So my Dr. put me on prescription testosterone pump at the time and it got back up to 300 something then my insurance wouldn’t cover the one I was on. So I had to go with a daily transdermal patch but by the time it was approved, I was without my meds for close to 6 months. It happened over and over, 6 months with, 6 months without. It drove me crazy for all those years up until this past year now. It’s been steady now for going on a year and I hope it doesn’t skip it anymore because it’s seeming like I’m ready for business and so is my wife who’s been patiently waiting by my side and we’re both nervous, we feel like high school kids again, at least this time we don’t have to hide!!!
    Thank you, Bob Keeler
