Want to get rid of your gag reflex with deep throat spray? Here’s what you should know

To deep throat or not to deep throat? That is the question everyone who gives a blowjob will have to answer at some point. There’s a common assumption that getting a dick to the back of your throat is one of the ultimate goals of a good BJ, but sometimes certain things get in the way of that—like, your partner having a huge penis, you having a small mouth or you having a sensitive gag reflex. Your gag reflex triggers your back throat (oropharynx) muscles to resist swallowing. This is where deep throat spray and throat-numbing sprays come in, but what exactly are they? Are they safe to use? And what are the alternatives, if any?

What are throat-numbing sprays, and what are they used for?

Throat numbing spray, also known as deep throat spray, is used to decrease the sensation in the back of the throat, allowing for deeper, more penetrative oral sex. Numbing agents contained in the deep throat spray are specifically designed to limit any discomfort you might feel when giving a blowjob and help prevent your gag reflex.

How do you use deep throat numbing spray safely?

If you enjoy giving oral sex but struggle with deep throating, you might decide to use numbing spray. After picking out whichever brand of spray you want to use, you’ll want to start by applying a little bit of the product to the inside of your throat. You should start feeling the numbing sensation in no more than a few minutes.

Once your throat feels numb enough, take your partner’s penis into your mouth as deeply as you feel comfortable. But remember, slower is better, at least at first, anyway. It’s also important to remember that throat-numbing sprays won’t make you completely numb. If anything, numbing spray for deep throat might allow you to take down an extra inch or two into your mouth than what you’re used to and help limit how much gagging you’ll do. But it’s still important to be mindful of how you’re feeling during the process and don’t force yourself to take in too much all at once.

If you feel the effects of the spray wearing off, most sprays can be safely reapplied up to two or three times. Most sprays only require a single spray to initially get the right amount of numbing action for your throat, but regardless, make sure that you read the application directions on whatever oral numbing product you purchase.

Does deep throat spray actually work?

If you look at reviews online, you’ll likely notice that the reviews are mixed. Some people swear that it completely gets rid of their gag reflex, while other people swear that these sprays are a complete waste of time and money.

Either way, the experience you have with deep throat sprays will depend on the person using it, how much of the spray they apply, which deep throat spray they’re using, how much trial-and-error has gone into the process, and how big your partner is. Unfortunately, this isn’t a one-experience-fits-all (or, rather, one-throat-fits-all) kind of thing, so you may have an entirely different experience from someone else.

Are there any negative side effects of using throat-numbing sprays?

When using throat numbing spray to give head, you always want to be careful not to overdo it. Ideally, these products should reduce the gag reflex and make blowjobs more pleasant for both partners, but that doesn’t mean they’ll not block out pain completely. In fact, they aren’t even supposed to completely eliminate pain because pain is your body’s way of telling you that something isn’t safe. So, if your partner is being a bit too enthusiastic with the thrusting, be aware of your limits and communicate the whole way through.

You should especially pay attention to your body’s reaction after using the spray. If you aren’t used to deep-throating, you may notice some soreness in your throat. If this soreness continues for more than two days or is accompanied by a rash, fever, swelling, headache, or nausea, contact a doctor immediately.

Also, be aware that numbing ingredients will sometimes transfer from your throat to your partner’s penis. Depending on how you perceive it, this can be an unintentional bonus or a hindrance because numbing products can deliberately delay the genitals from orgasm

Do you absolutely need deep throat spray for a blowjob? Of course not. But, if gagging is a serious challenge for you, then buying a product to numb yourself probably won’t magically make you be able to take a 6-inch down your throat without any struggles. Let’s be realistic. It might even make things worse. In addition to that, the risks might outweigh the benefits regardless of how much you struggle without the numbing spray. You might hear anecdotally that it’s a sexy lifesaver, but in reality, there’s no way to be 100% sure things will work out in your favour.

However, if you’re still annoyed by your gag reflex and you’re determined to at least try some alternatives for deep throat spray, then consider the following suggestions:

Use flavoured lube

Sometimes, the problem isn’t necessarily a physical one. Sometimes, the problem is a mental thing. You might just need a bit of flavour for a better taste, which may reduce the amount of gagging. Think about it. Dry swallowing a giant, flavourless pill is way less appetizing than dry swallowing a piece of delicious, juicy steak, right? The same could be said for having a flavourless dick in your mouth vs. a dick with some tastiness. Of course, flavoured lube is no replacement for good hygiene, but it can make the blowjob experience that little bit more pleasant for the giver. There are all kinds of flavours out there, but most are very sweet (which also means they definitely shouldn’t be used in the vagina or anus). If you’re unsure of where to start, try Sliquid’s flavoured lube. The brand is a high-quality water-based lube with no glycerine or parabens, and they have several flavours to choose from, including apple, [cherry vanilla, piña colada, pink lemonade, and blackberry fig.]

Try mouthwatering methods

It’s not exactly a secret that lubrication makes sex better, and making your salivary glands things extra sloppy might help your partner’s penis get deeper during a blowjob. For a sloppier experience, try the Slow Sex mouthwatering spray. This contains malic acid, a substance that is found in sour candy, so it’s a safe way to get your mouth watering. You could also try Flintts Mouthwatering Mints, which come in a variety of flavours and strengths. These mints will make you salivate like a dog and offer a tingly sensation that you’ll never forget.

Incorporate your hands

Your mouth isn’t the only way to please a penis. Once you’ve had enough inches that you can comfortably fit in your mouth, place your hands on the rest of your partner’s shaft, move them up and down, or twist them to add a hand job/blow job combination.

Train your gag reflex when brushing your teeth

If you want to get around the gag reflex, then you can try gradually training it away. Every time you brush your tongue, push your brush back just far enough to where you’re on the verge of gagging. Keep your toothbrush at that spot for around 10 or 20 seconds. Then go a bit further after a day or two, or whenever you’re comfortable. It’s important to do this every time you brush your teeth (so, at least twice a day). You might notice that after a few weeks, you may have pushed your gag reflex back to your throat. If not in the back of your throat, you may have at least made significant progress, and that’s okay too!

Take a breather

If you’re getting overwhelmed and find yourself gagging, don’t be afraid to stop for a few moments to catch your breath. When you go back to sucking, don’t hold your breath if you have a habit of doing so. Try breathing through your nose. Breathing through your mouth might make you more likely to gag. When you’re breathing, it’ll help you to relax and ultimately enjoy yourself, which is the most important part of sex.

The entire existence of good head deep throat sprays perpetuates the idea that you have to go super deep to give a good blowjob, and that’s not necessarily the case! If you ask a man the question, “What makes a good blowjob? There’s a 90% chance that he’ll mention enthusiasm before he mentions anything about specific techniques. Also, keep in mind that deepthroating is only one of many techniques in the figurative oral sex handbook, and it’s definitely not the only way to give a great-feeling blowjob. If you can deep throat without any issues, and your partner enjoys it, then that’s great for you! Otherwise, listen to your body and don’t feel like you have to numb yourself just to go deeper.

Remember, sex is supposed to be fun! Sure, the majority of this article is technically about performance, but if all else fails, forget about deep throat sprays and alternative ways to train your throat. If you’re having fun with your partner, then everything else will fall into place.
